Specialist Sustainability Authority to Strengthen Your Tenders and Elevate Early-Stage Strategy
Public sector frameworks, developer procurement and housing association briefs increasingly demand demonstrable sustainability credentials. I partner with architectural practices as a named Specialist Sustainability Sub-Consultant, adding recognised authority to your tender submissions, and providing expert peer review during early concept stages.
As a Passivhaus-trained former Associate and Housing Lead at Coffey Architects, and former co-host of the Architects' Journal Climate Champions podcast, I offer design teams high-level strategic sustainability expertise without the overhead of a full-time senior hire.
Strategic Services for Architectural Studios
1. Tender & Framework Bid Support
Maximize your scoring on sustainability, climate resilience, and social value criteria in public sector and institutional bids:
Named Specialist Sub-Consultant: Add a Passivhaus-trained housing specialist and recognized industry researcher to your bid team organization chart.
Bespoke Tender Narratives: Drafting project-specific sustainability, whole-life carbon, and climate adaptation narratives for competition entries and tender bids.
Strategic Framework Alignment: A building designed along truly sustainable principles will make frameworks like LETI, RIBA 2030, NABERS UK, BREEAM and ESG Scope 1-3 alignment easier to achieve. We help teams refine concepts for sustainability, leaving carbon calculations and credit counting to specialist assessors.
Bid-Ready Tender Pack: Access downloadable CVs, professional credentials, and project track records formatted specifically for insertion into standard procurement templates.
2. Early-Stage Design & Peer Review ("Critical Friend")
I work as an architectural peer, helping your studio refine early Stage 1–2 concepts so that sustainability enhances—rather than compromises—your design intent:
Appraising embodied carbon impacts of early spatial concepts: Does the form suit building with low carbon materials like stone and timber? Are there carbon-heavy moves like deep basements, complex cantilevers or transfer structures?
Appraising concept designs to minimise operational energy: Does the form factor (shape) of the building reduce heat loss? Does the plan allow for good daylighting and ventilation?
Retain vs. Rebuild and Retrofit Strategy: At the concept level, we evaluate the balance between retaining existing building fabric and new construction, considering carbon, heritage, and capital cost. Is a new building required? And should a retained building be decarbonised more by fabric intervention, or better MEP?
Facade Concept & Climate Adaptation: Is the glazing ration appropriate? Is there enough depth for insulation? And is there a shading strategy to prevent overheating?
3. Client & Stakeholder Workshop Facilitation
Strategic Framework Audits: There is an abundance of sustainability standards: LETI, RIBA 2030, BREEAM, NABERS UK, Living Building Challenge, etc, each with different strengths. I help clients identify how these frameworks can inform their brief, to help get them a building that performs well for them.
Stage 0-1 Briefing Workshops: Co-hosting workshop sessions with key clients, funders and team members, tease out sustainability priorities, align on targets and inform the brief for the building.
An architectural perspective on sustainability.
My background is in architecture, not engineering. I can help you steer your designs to being more sustainable, through massing, plan organisation and façade concepts, so your projects perform well naturally. Working with me isn’t about compliance credits and box ticking, but a holistic approach to sustainable design.
I’ve worked on award-winning buildings in design-led practices, so I understand spatial quality and the process of delivering exceptional architecture.
Let’s collaborate!
I offer flexible models of engagement. I can offer fixed-fee bid support, day rates and retained sub-consultancy agreements for major frameworks.
